Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
