India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Several parts of the city recorded an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the healthy level recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than healthy limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the current city government petitioned the supreme court to propose a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and environment".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, the court approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution spiking around midnight to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Issue

The dangerously high readings of pollution in Delhi have remained as a major problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Factors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

In these regions, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in the city.
