Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The theme of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Musical Talent and Access
Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the evening's event.
"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
