Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
